Spectacular cliffs, green prairies, numerous castles with great views, romantic provincial towns and the wonderful alpine landscapes are a once in a life time experience that can't be missed. Some of the many reasons that over 79 million tourists visit France each year.

As well as being a city of romance, Paris has many other attractions, the most famous of which is the Eiffel Tower, where it's possible to climb to the top and enjoy wonderful views of Paris. The Louvre Museum, is the world's most famous art Museum and the Arc de Triomphe, are also must sees. To the south of Paris is the Loire Valley. With towns and villages from fairytales and landscapes that are impossible to forget. It is home to many historical monuments and houses known for their architecture. There are also world-famous castles, such as Châteaux d' Amboise, Chateau de Villandry and Chenonceau. And of course there are the many beautiful vineyards which produce some of the finest wines in the world. In the far south Nice enjoys a Mediterranean climate and with it's 4 miles of beaches, it is a great place to relax. Take a leisurely drive along the coast to the casinos of Monaco or visit the famous Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes.

Driving Tips in France

France has one of Europe's most extensive road networks, offering excellent connections to neighbouring countries in western Europe. Motorways are mostly toll roads (autoroutes a peage), which are always marked with an 'A'. Toll roads can be expensive over long distances but they provide the fastest, most efficient routes. 'N' roads (routes nationales) and 'D' roads (routes departementales) are usually more spacious and less crowded than the motorways.

  • You need: A valid driving licence, passport/ID and a valid credit card.
  • You drive: On the right so remember to give away traffic from your left when using roundabouts.
  • Speed limit: Motorway 130km/h(80mph), open roads 90km/h(55mph), within city limits 50km/h(31mph).When raining, the speed limit is reduced by 10 km/h(6mph).
  • About fuel:All ratings of unleaded petrol and diesel are available. As in the UK, LPG is only available at some stations. Leaded no longer exists. The cost is approximately the same as in the UK, but diesel is approximately 25% cheaper. Supermarkets outside main towns sell the cheapest fuel in France.
  • Parking rules: When parking, keep an eye out for zones marked out on the road surface with the word 'Payant'.This is a pay area and you must purchase a ticket. If you see a road marked with an 'X', the parking space is for loading and unloading only.
  • Winter tyres:Are recommended but not obligatory (as of January 2008). Snow chains are advised to be carried in mountainous regions, especially the Alps, during winter season..
