Driving Tips in Switzerland

Cars rented in Switzerland will already have the motorway tax paid. However, if you are intending to drive into Switzerland in a car rented in another country you will need to purchase a sticker to display in your car before you can use the motorways. These can be bought in Switzerland from service stations & post offices or online from the Swiss Travel Centre before you travel.

• You need: A valid driving license, passport/ID and a valid credit card.
• You drive: On the left so remember to give away traffic from your right when using roundabouts.
• Speed limits: Motorway 120km/h(74mph), open roads 80km/h(50mph), urban areas 50km/h(31mph).
• Seat Belts: are compulsory in both front and rear of vehicle. Children under 7 are not permitted to travel in the front seat. All children under the age of 12 must be appropriate restraints.
• Fuel: Petrol stations along the expressways are usually open from 6am to 10pm.
• Parking: Most towns have Blue Zones for which you will need to obtain a disc - available free of charge from petrol stations. It is illegal to park on the pavement.
• Headlights: Dipped headlights must be used during the day.
