Toulouse is located in the Midi-Pyrénées region, roughly half-way between France's Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. It is the fourth largest city in France, surpassed only by Paris, Lyon and Marseille. As is the norm in most of Southern France, Toulouse has a temperate climate, with warm summers and mild winters.
While a far cry from the harsh winters of northern Europe, winter in Toulouse does bring a drop in temperature and the occasional snowfall, though average temperatures are around 12º during the day. The summers can be quite hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 30º. Arguably the best seasons to visit are Autumn and Spring, which boast pleasant temperatures and sunny days.

The city of Toulouse is served by a bus network as well as by metro, both operated by Tisséo. The Toulouse Metro has two lines: Line A and Line B. They intersect in the town centre, at Jean Jaurès station. The metro is in operation from 5.15am every day, until midnight from Sunday to Thursday, and on Friday and Saturday until 1am.
There is also a shuttle that serves the city centre and runs through most of the historic locations. Its use is free and you only need to wave at the driver to get on.
Things to know when driving your car rental
Traffic and parking
Driving a car hire in Toulouse is not overly complicated, though you should expect heavier traffic during the summer months than during the rest of the year. Furthermore, it's important to keep in mind that the city centre - as is the case with a lot of European cities - has many narrow streets, the occasional pedestrian area, and parking may be hard to find. A good option is to park your car rental close to a metro station and then take the underground to the centre.
Street parking is limited, particularly, as mentioned above, in the centre. The parking time limit in the centre is two hours, while elsewhere in the city the limit is four hours. Most parking is paid from Monday to Saturday and free on Sundays. There are many convenient car parks throughout the city where you can leave your vehicle without having to worry about a time limit. These are well signed and you will have no difficulty finding them.
Toulouse has easy access to four highways, the A61, the A62, the A64 and the A68, and you can easily set off to explore the neighbouring region, as well as drive to other main French cities. Narbonne is located roughly 119 miles away from Toulouse and the drive takes around an hour and a half, while driving to Bordeaux - which is located around 151 miles away - normally takes only a little over two hours.
