In order to drive a vehicle in Austria, you must be at least 18 years old and have a full driving licence valid in your country of residence, as well as an International Driver's Licence. If you do not have your photo licence, only the paper licence, then you must carry your passport when driving in Austria.

   

Age Requirements for Austria

To hire a car in Austria, you must be at least 19 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for one year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.

General Austria driving information, laws, rules and regulations:

  • Driving in Austria is done on the right-hand side of the road.

  • Overtaking is on the left-hand side of the road.

  • Seat belts when driving a hire car in Austria are mandatory.

  • The use of a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, with the exception of hands-free systems.

  • Drivers are to carry a valid driver's licence, registration documents and insurance documents at all times while driving.

  • Petrol stations in Austria are open from 8am to 8pm, with some stations in major cities being open 24 hours.

Tolls in Austria

In Austria, all vehicles using the autobahn have to display a highway toll sticker. Austria Toll stickers are available at the border when entering from another country or at petrol stations.

Austria Parking Information

Certain areas marked by blue lines on the road are designated as "Blue-Zone" parking. When parking your Vienna car hire in these zones, drivers must display a parking disc with the time printed on it, as there is a three-hour parking limit. Parking discs can be obtained in banks, shops, or from automated disc machines in the parking area.

One-Way Car Hire in Austria

Domestic one-way car hire is unrestricted and free of charge. There are fees for international one-way rentals, and not all vehicles are permitted. If you plan to drive with an Austria car hire, you can pick it up in one location and return it to another location, however there are some restrictions that you need to check with your car hire supplier.
