Driving Licence Requirements in Russia

The driving licence requirements in Russia state that you must have a full driving licence that is valid in your country of residence. An international driver?s licence is also required when driving a car hire in St Petersburg.

Russia Age Restrictions

To hire a car in Russia, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. A few car classes have a maximum hire age of 70 years. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge when hiring a car.

Russia Road Rules and Petrol Stations

General Russia driving information, laws rules and regulations:

  • Driving in Russia is on the right hand side of the road.

  • Seat belts when driving a hire car in Russia are mandatory.

  • The use of a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, with the exception of a hands-free system.

  • Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid driver?s licence, registration documents and insurance documents.

  • Visiting motorists who have held a driving licence for less than two years must not exceed 70 kph (43 mph). It is common practice for traffic police to stop motorists for spot checks.

  • Petrol stations in Russia generally open from 6am to 10pm with some stations in major cities and on the highway open 24 hours. Almost no petrol stations have water or air.

  

Tolls in Russia

There are a number of toll roads in the Barnaul and Pskov Regions, Pechori-state border and M4-Don (18km close to Lipetsk costs RUR20 for cars and RUR40 for trucks). It is wise to always have some change on you for the tolls in Russia.

Russia Parking Information

With the number of cars constantly increasing, local authorities have been introducing harsher ways to deal with the problem of illegal parking in Moscow. It's not unusual for wrongly parked cars to be towed away. Multi-storey car parks are the safest option for parking your car hire in Moscow.

One-Way Car Hire in Russia

One way car hire in Russia is permitted. Between Moscow and St. Petersburg there would be a fee of approximately €340 EUR + VAT *(paid locally). If it is between any other locations then the fee would be approximately €40 EUR + VAT *(paid locally). At the moment travel outside Russia is not permitted with many car hire suppliers.
