I have used Auto Europe before with no complaints and the booking this time was easy. However please see my comments about GoldCar LV below, a company which I think you need to take a further look at regarding the transparency of their pricing.

Their policy re paying for petrol used is subsidising their rental fees (which appear low), and therefore the figures quoted for rental are not transparent. I paid 85 euro for a full tank of petrol on a Seat Ibiza, with prices in Tenerife at 1.13euor per litre. Any fuel left in the tank therefore is then charged again to the next hirer. I would expect to pay approximately the same price for filling up my 3 litre Lexus at current UK prices and this has a much bigger tank. In the end, this was no cheaper than hiring from what may have initially seemed to be a more expensive company. In addition, insurance was not as comprehensive as expected, and I felt I needed to upgrade this on arrival at airport rental office.

Good car but:
(1) A very hard sell on Goldcar extra insurance.
(2) Salesman tried to charge us for extra insurance, even though we had declined.
(3) We were overcharged for a tank full of fuel.
(4) Collect full - return empty fuel policy encourages frivolous use of car.
(5) No liquid in screen wash reservior.

We were very satisifed however we were not so pleased about the fuel cost surcharge for a group 1 car being the same as for top of the range car. Group 1 cars have much smaller tanks, and we were not made aware of this. Therefore we would not recommend you to other people despite the fact that we have rented for the last week of our holiday.

Car was dirty inside and smelled of smoke. It was scatched and dinted. It did run well and was better than previous corsas. (was polo). Check in and out and staff were all very helpful.

The service was great, the new VW Polo was imaculate, the staff were very friendly both on collection and return. however the additional hidden insurance charge was deceitful. However the total cost was competative and we would use them again.

I would rather pay the extra 'up front' for the insurance than be told at the destination airport. You budget so much for a holiday and it would be better to know the full price at the start.

Although I had booked and paid for a NO EXCESS deal the local agent tried to sell me more cover on the basis that only the body of the car was covered. I declined and was surprised that the car was not even inspected on return. Also the return empty fuel policy is a rip off if the car is not used much on the holiday
