Celebrate Lent in Athens

Celebrate Lent in Athens

Feb 01, 2012
Every year, Greece celebrates the Christian tradition of Lent during the Clean Monday event. Greece is renowned throughout the world for its religious and cultural heritage, and Clean Monday promises to be an ideal way for visitors taking a car hire in Greece to sample the unique atmosphere of the Grecian islands at the festival.

Clean Monday takes place on the first day of Lent. During the celebration, thousands of locals and visitors journey to the rolling hillsides near the Acropolis to fly kites at Philopappou Hill. Many hundreds of colourful tethered aircraft will fill the skies as people celebrate the beginning of the Lent period.

In addition to kite-flying, visitors taking a car hire in Athens will be able to sample authentic Greek dishes throughout the festival, including lagana, a flat bread with sesame seeds. There will also be live music and traditional Greek dancing to entertain the crowds.

After taking in the spectacular sights of Philopappou Hill, tourists can wander around the historic Acropolis, a citadel that is more than 2,000 years old. The site, which attracts millions of visitors every year, was once known as Cecropia, named after the first Athenian king, Cecrops.
